How to be more teachable:
- All innovation starts with destruction – you have to deal with it.
- The best ideas come when we have a clear “deck” – when we have a clean slate that has to be written on.
- Start with no walls in place. And then create a “best case” scenario. Imagine what you would change given the best case. Now you are close to understanding what it will take.
How difficult is that to do?
- It’s destroying a lot of your history.
- You have the capacity to change–will you?
- You can do it – but it is an issue of the will.
- If you won’t commit – then don’t put yourself through the pain.
Keeping the discussion focused:
Most people who do professional public speaking are amazing speakers. People say this about Dr. Phil as well. But one way to make a meeting amazing is to make sure it is totally focused on the needs of the participants. We often do some pre-engagement evaluation, some mystery shopping, some background work, all with the idea of insuring an amazing speech/seminar once we arrive.
Make Phil’s visit more affordable:
It is easy to propose an event, it is harder to find a way to make this cost efficient. Here is what years of experience has taught us: people can find money for what they perceive will bring positive bottom-line results. Here are some suggestions for making our meeting affordable.
- The more the merrier. Many companies who want a great price find value in inviting vendors, or other companies to pick up part of the tab. Basically, this is a sponsorship process. Often companies find out their vendors are more than willing to do this (the vendors may want to do some commercials during the meeting). This financing approach is common today, especially with vendors. Vendors can show appreciation for past business by underwriting the meeting for a company.
- Find the money. The money is often in the budget, but not in a budget line called “professional speaking budget.” For example, it may be found in the printing budget line. Occasionally, it is packaged into the travel budget line. It might be in the entertainment budget line. The key is taking a hard look for hidden resources.
- Dr. Phil often recommends that the cost be covered by a package price per attendee. This is especially workable when C.E.U.’s are involved.
- Dr. Phil often allows his book to be sold by an association or business to help defray the cost of the meeting.
- One way to make this affordable is to tie Dr. Phil in for three meetings (maybe over three years). The idea is to bundle meetings/books/materials for a better price per meeting. This also enhances the probability that the information will actually be implemented.
